Important changes are being made to the way Washington State recognizes domestic partnerships. Starting on June 30, 2014, the domestic partnership status will only be available in situations where one of the two partners in a couple is over 62 years old or is of the same-sex. All existing domestic partnerships will automatically convert to a marriage at that time unless prior steps are taken to dissolve your existing relationship, or if one individual in your relationship is 62 years or older.

If you are planning to dissolve an existing domestic partnership, things can get difficult quickly. There are a wide variety of different issues to consider in advance, which includes establishing a parenting plan, child custody, debt division, property division and child support. Spousal maintenance (alimony) will also be a topic that will need to be addressed. Before you take steps to dissolve a domestic partnership on your own, it is always important to contact a professional with gay and LGBTQIA+ family law experience to help make sure that you are aware of all of your options.
